Tekcert Forums Are Here

After months in the works, the Tekcert Forums are officially open to the public!

For the next month or so, the forums will be in "beta" - this is to ensure things are running smoothly enough to let the forums continue to run. During this period, I will be making modifications and improvements to the forums. Also, I hope that you, the readers, will step up to the plate and become contributors as well. Create an account, login, and post to the forums.  Let me know if you run into any problems or tell me if you have a suggestion to improve the forums. To send me feedback, use the Contact form located here.

I've put in more hours than I care to admit on implementing a forum system that is "integrated".   I looked at various options of implementing a separate open source forum system such as phpbb, but it made more sense to allow people to login once and post on the forums or comment on the blogs with the same account. So, if you create an account and login, you will be able to post to the forums as well as comment on blog posts without having to type in your name or be labeled "anonymous". Please be aware that you should read and agree with the Terms and Conditions of the site AND you will need to follow the Commenting and Forum Thread Guidelines

I hope this becomes a useful source of information for everyone. I've tried to create more certification focused forums, but if you want some new forum categories let me know and it might get added.

Thanks and Happy Posting!

GNS3: Using SecureCRT w/Tabs

GNS3SecureCRT

After much pain and toil, I have finally gotten SecureCRT 64-bit to integrate with GNS3 where each connection opens in it's own tab with the correct hostname. Here is the string I used (Under Terminal Preferences):

c:\PROGRA~1\VANDYK~1\SecureCRT\SecureCRT.exe /T /N %d
/telnet 127.0.0.1 %p

Found this helpful tip on this forum post.

CCIE Voice...Let the Adventure Begin

Well, my next CCIE R&S renewal date is coming up in May, so I've decided to start my trek through the CCIE Voice. For now, I'll be focusing on the CCIE Voice Written to meet the immediate need of not allowing my CCIE to expire. Maybe I'll look at the lab exam after that... Although, I didn't have any kids when I got my CCIE R&S...this may take a little longer...

So - here's what I'm finding for CCIE Voice study (not much):

CCIE Voice Exam Quick Reference Sheets (Cisco Press)

CCIE Voice Book List (Cisco)

CCIE Voice Written Exam Blueprint (Cisco)

CiscoBlog Forums...

What I was worried about finally happened. My CiscoBlog Forums were finally destroyed by spammers... This was completely my fault since all I did was install a forum engine and close my eyes hoping they would maintain themselves. Perhaps someday (when I have more time) I can bring them back. For now, CiscoBlog will return back to my personal Cisco journal :o).

GNS3 Dream Fulfilled

Lo and behold - my GNS3 Lab Dream has been mostly fulfilled! As I was blogging on Network World, one of the readers posted this link:
http://7200emu.hacki.at/
It's a massive GNS3 support/lab forum where many people have created lab topologies for existing books/scenarios out on the market! Much less work than creating labs manually (my initial idea). I've redirected GNS3Labs.com to this site - great stuff!
Okay...I have to admit...I'm a little bummed this is already out there. It feels a little like I jumped out of my chair saying, "wouldn't it be great if there was a device that could excite water molecules to cause friction and heat up food?!?!" Ehhh... I'm sure I'll get over it - I'm really excited to see this site in play!
UPDATE: In surfing through the site, they even have a .NET file for the CCIE topology I created for CBTNuggets! Awesome!

Okay...I can admit when I'm wrong...

SecureCRT is incredible... Last week, my PuttyCM software crashed again. In a moment of frustration, I pulled out my credit card and paid the $139.00 for SecureCRT 6.0 with 3 years of maintenance. It's a little like the flu shot...you feel stupid paying money for it and it really hurts, but you're glad you did it when it's all over.
How did I ever live without this anti-idle feature before?!?
Ah geez...side note - I just went to the Putty CM website and saw they now have Alpha version 0.7.0 out that fixes many of the bugs I previously complained about. I can't believe I've just wasted $139.00 on SecureCRT now.
...I'm such a schizophrenic flake...

It's CCNA Month at Network World!

I mentioned a couple posts ago that I've been drafted to blog at Network World's Cisco Subnet for the month of May. Since Network World is promoting my new CCNA Practice Questions (Third Edition) book, I figured I would make my Network World blog dedicated to strategies to pass the CCNA exam. If you're interested, come on over.
PS - my CiscoBlog postings may be a little light in May. Talk about being spread as thin as butter...
PPS - The CiscoBlog Forum is rockin'! Thanks so much for those who have already started posting and replying!!! Killer.

CiscoBlog Forums...They're here...I'm frightened...

Okay...I promised these at the end of last year, and I actually delivered on my promise. They were created, I just never told anyone. I've been talking with a couple friends about this and they always say something like, "dude...you SO don't know what you're getting into with forums..." They're right...I don't! But, nonetheless, the time has come to try it out.
http://forum.ciscoblog.com
I'm really taking a "if you build it, they will come" approach to this. I'll be trying it out based on this post for a little while, then I will add an official link to the forums from the main page. Please comment on here if you have any suggestions!

CallManager 6.0 and 6.1 in VMWare

Sorry for the lack of posting as of late. All my time has been consumed in finishing up the CIPT (CallManager) series for CBTNuggets. While CallManager 4.X currently owns the market (and probably will for years to come), it looks as though Cisco is producing a pretty killer solution in Callmanager 6.X versions. So...I bought the software off Ebay and found this link detailing instructions on getting 6.X versions of CallManager running in VMware. What surprised me is that these instructions are from Cisco TAC!!! Hurrah for Cisco finally realizing that people will be running CCM in lab environments! No more registry hacks (not that you could with Linux anyhow). Cisco even provides the VMWare environment file that sets up VMWare exactly like you need it for CCM 6.X.

Help! Remote Switch IP Changes...

I feel so shamed. I have completely neglected the CiscoBlog since the holidays and my first post of the new year is a plea for help. How pathetic! Forgive me. I plan on putting plenty of time into the blog, answering many of the questions that have come in over the last few weeks, and getting that forum running (I'm really close!). The check's in the mail
So here's what I need help with. This weekend, I'm doing a massive network migration for a government agency. They have about 60 switches that I will be moving over to a new IP addressing scheme (creating a separate management VLAN). So here's, in effect, what I'll be doing:
interface vlan 1
no ip address
interface vlan 200
ip address 10.20.x.x 255.255.0.0 (each switch gets its own IP address)
no shutdown
Seems simple, right? Well, these switches are spread over 15 buildings miles apart using fiber cabling.

Cisco Blog Forum

No...it's not here yet. BUT, I've gotten enough requests for a general forum that I've decided to give it a go. I've downloaded and installed a forum engine which has a daunting number of options. Over the next week or two, I'll be configuring the forum options and creating the boards. Are there any specific categories ya'll would like to see?
Please keep in mind, this forum will be about community and not just me answering everyone's questions! I'm sure I'll jump in here or there on a particularly exciting topic, but I know this is one of those systems that could suck me in causing me to abandon life as a whole...which I've tried to stop as of late. Please tag any suggestions / comments on to this post - thanks!

Welcome!

Hello everyone! I'd like to welcome you to the Cisco Blog! I don't know
about you, but there are times when I have those unanswerable questions
or just a flat out weird network configuration I'm trying to set up...Or
even those times when you're looking over someone's shoulder as they
are setting up a router, and you think, "wow! I didn't know you could do
it that way!" (but of course, never say anything for sake of your own
pride). Well, that's why I created this blog - to give a forum to all
interested in the topic of Cisco. Feel free to post about anything Cisco
related: questions, comments, configurations, tips...whatever.
Just a quick run through the few rules-of-the-blog:
1. Keep the language clean
2. Try to keep the topics centralized around Cisco technology
3. Invite a friend!

That's it! Post away!

Update: As of September 2010, Cisco Blog is now Tekcert.com
