Firefox 10 is out

Mozilla drop-shipped the 10th version of their browser on the world today. New stuff in Firefox 10 includes bug fixes, developer tools, and some other neat stuff.

You can get the latest version by giving in to the nag box that pops up in previous versions or by clicking here: http://www.mozilla.org/firefox

Firefox 8 is now out

Mozilla hasn't stopped to take a break from it's rapid release plan this year, in fact they've blown right past it. Earlier this year, Mozilla announced on their roadmap that they would be releasing Firefox versions 4, 5, 6, and 7, however now with version 8 being released, you could say they've exceeded their own expectations.

What's new in version 8?

You might be wondering "what's new since I just upgraded yesterday, er..last month?" Well, the feature list is available in full in the release notes, but here's a quick summary:

Re-enable http:// protocol in URL bar for Firefox 7

Mozilla is at it again with their rapid fire release of Firefox 7. If you have automatic updates enabled, it most likely restarted your browser and installed version 7 without you even really noticing. This release likely has some whizzbang feature they believe justifies a major revision, however I doubt most people would agree it's major revision worthy.

The topic of today's post is regarding one of the lesser advertised features slipped into this version which lends to the "stupidization" of web surfers. The protocol handle is now gone at the leading edge of the URL. So, previously you would see "http://tekcer.com", it now reads "tekcert.com". Probably not a show stopper for your average sheepish websurfer, but if you are security-minded and want to know whether you're accessing something via http or https, it's handy to see it listed.

Thankfully, there is a work around. Whoever thought this was a great idea at least recognized that some people wouldn't think it was great, so they added a configuration setting to undo the damage. Here's how to get it fixed:

Firefox 4 Status Bar

If any of you out there use Firefox and have recently upgraded to Firefox 4, have you noticed they got rid of the status bar at the bottom of the browser? I'm so used to mousing over links and looking at the status bar to see where they go before clicking, it's been puzzling trying to figure out the behavior of the new Firefox status bar. Sometimes it's on the bottom left side, sometimes it's on the bottom right side. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for it - and quite frankly it's maddening.

Compare this to a speedometer in a car. Imagine if it was left out or changed in the 2011 model car you just bought. Every time you glance down to check your speed, it's not there! Or it is, but on the left side or right side! It's enough to drive you nuts!
