Recycle Anything!

If you have a stack of computers in the corner that you don't have a need for anymore, find a million uses for the plastic bags you get at the store, or just want to be more "green" then here is an article for you:

Recycle Anything

This article is hosted at Articlebase.com and lists everything from bio-degradable lipstick containers that grow flowers if you plant them to explaining what you can do with the different types of plastics! Great stuff!

StorCenter Pro ix4-200d...Wicked cool.

Hands down, this Iomega StorCenter Pro ix4-200d is the most amazing product I've bought in the last year. If you've got VMWare ESX or ESXi in a lab environment (or even a small production environment), the cost of this quasi-SAN is a no brainer. I've currently got 8 VMs (including multiple CUCM 7.1 servers) running on this thing across bundled dual-Gigabit network connection. Supports SNMP monitoring. Brainless web-based setup. Fantastic. This is more exciting than the iPad :).

I seriously just walk into my office at random times just to watch the LCD display change.

GNS3 0.4.1 Release

GNS3 continues to get better every release. For those who haven't heard, GNS3 is Cisco network simulation emulation software that allows you to run the REAL IOS in a lab environment between multiple simulated emulated devices. This release now allows you to emulate 1700 routers and PIX firewalls! Killer.
There's plenty of talk that GNS3 will soon support virtual PCs in the lab environment.
I also stumbled upon another blog who has some great reading / tutorials on setting up and configuring GNS3: http://www.blindhog.net/. Kudos to all the video tutorials on the site!

CallManager 6.0 and 6.1 in VMWare

Sorry for the lack of posting as of late. All my time has been consumed in finishing up the CIPT (CallManager) series for CBTNuggets. While CallManager 4.X currently owns the market (and probably will for years to come), it looks as though Cisco is producing a pretty killer solution in Callmanager 6.X versions. So...I bought the software off Ebay and found this link detailing instructions on getting 6.X versions of CallManager running in VMware. What surprised me is that these instructions are from Cisco TAC!!! Hurrah for Cisco finally realizing that people will be running CCM in lab environments! No more registry hacks (not that you could with Linux anyhow). Cisco even provides the VMWare environment file that sets up VMWare exactly like you need it for CCM 6.X.

IOS Emulation Just Got Better

Quite some time ago, I wrote an article on the Dynagen/Dynamips system that has been developed to emulate (not simulate) IOS routers using a PC. Back when I originally wrote this update, you could only emulate a 7200 router and it took quite a bit of tweaking & tuning text files to make it happen. Things have definitely changed
Kudos to InternetworkExpert for putting together a pre-built Dynagen/Dynamips lab that emulates 9 different 3640 routers connected together in an impressive topology. Sure, they've created this environment to map to their lab scenarios which is what their business is built on; however, they've been kind enough to allow anyone to download this pre-built IOS emulation package for free.
Update: Thanks MB for also adding GNS3 (http://www.gns3.net) to the Dynamips lineup. This is the best package for IOS emulation yet!

CCNA Update

Well, it looks as though Cisco has finally done a MAJOR update to their famous CCNA program. This update will indeed make it more difficult to attain a CCNA...and for good reason! Many people are just getting their CCNA certification and stopping (not moving on to the CCNP, CCSP, or whatever). So...Cisco decided, if that's all your going to do, then we'll make it so you really have an idea of what you're doing!
I've been contracted to write the new CCNA Exam Cram / Exam Prep series and to record the new CBTNuggets CCNA series, so I've been researching what is new for quite some time...Here's the scoop:

CallManager on Non-MCS Equipment

I did it. I finally did it. I've got a Cisco CallManager 4.1(3) server running natively on a Dell Optiplex 270GX. Now, I'm not talking about the old registry hack forcing you to install Windows 2000, hack the registry, and then put the Cisco CallManager software on top of it. Doing this causes a host of problems because the base windows operating system does not have the correct services running and permissions set.
I'm talking about a hack that allows you to install the Cisco CallManager Windows image straight from the CD-ROM, setting all the correct permissions and giving you a working Cisco CallManager on a non-MCS server. Here's what I did:
