CCNA 2013: Now it's Real

If you haven't heard, Cisco has unleashed the new CCNA. Quite a beefy upgrade from the old. I've recorded a quick MicroNugget giving an overview of what's new.

CCNA 2013: All Things New!

All the rumors proved true: Cisco has updated the CCNA yet again (see yellow text in this link...as I post this, the link to the new exam objectives is broken, but I'm sure Cisco will fix it soon).

UPDATE: Cisco has now removed the link. This fellow grabbed a screencap of it. Perhaps they're waiting until 3/26 to announce?

I would consider this one a MAJOR update, once again moving many CCNP topics down into the CCNA program...barrier to entry now sky high! Welcome to the technology world!!

(I'm curious how much more can be added to this entry level certification...)

A Focus on CCNA

Based on your feedback, I've created a BUNCH of MicroNuggets (free, fun, fly-by view of some technology). Lately, I've received quite a bit of email on the CCNA certification...so I focused a couple MicroNuggets on the top questions I received:

Building a CCNA Home Lab

How to Study for Cisco Exams

Configuring Standard ACLs

Configuring Extended ACLs

MicroNuggets a Plenty!

CBTNuggets latest idea to love the world and spread the word has been a catalog of FREE MicroNuggets! These are really fun to make, but frankly, I'm out of ideas. I need ideas for Cisco concepts / configurations that I can cover in 5 minutes or so. I've been in Cisco so long that I miss a lot of the basic concepts that are difficult for folks to understand. Anyone have some thoughts or suggestions?

TwitterChat this Morning - 9am PST

Update: Thanks to everyone who participated!
View the Transcript here...

My first Cisco Live 2012 is this morning (5/10/12) at 9am PST: TwitterChat!

Feel free to join #CLUS and hang between 9am - 10am. CBTNuggets will be continuing the fun from 10am - 11am at #CBTchat.

See you soon!

Jeremy

Care to TwitterChat?

Well, it appears my friend Adam beat me to the punch on the Cisco Live posting. So, here's my additions from a personal side.

  1. Cisco has scheduled me for a TwitterChat next week on Thursday- please come and jump in! This was surprisingly fun when we did it last year. Here's the information: http://www.ciscolive.com/us/attendees/social-networking/twitter/
  2. For those coming to Cisco Live 2012, I'll be presenting a wonderfully amazing and dazzling session (watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat!) on CCNA Voice. The session is scheduled for 12:30pm on Tuesday - if this is even half as fun as it was last year, it will be a blast!
  3. I'll also be doing a Cisco Press "Meet the Author" session at Cisco Live 2012 at 4:30pm on Tuesday  in the Cisco Press booth.
See you soon!

GNS3: Save a little memory with VPSC

This tip was emailed to me and seems pretty sweet (haven't tested it). Check out this link:

http://www.freecode.com.cn/doku.php?id=wiki:vpcs

Rather than eating up resources using routers as hosts in GNS3, you can use a Virtual PC Simulator (VPSC) that can ping, traceroute, get a DHCP address, etc...

While this is good in theory, I'm curious how difficult it is to roll this into the Windows version. With memory becoming a cheap commodity, it's just too easy to drag another router on the GNS3 landscape.

CBTNuggets Update: BGP Ready...What's Next?

Hello all!

Over the last week, I put the finishing touches on the Cisco BGP Series over at CBTNuggets - that's definitely a fun one! Now I'm charting out...what's next? The logical answer is MPLS (a sister series to BGP), but the rumors say that the MPLS certification will soon be discontinued and replaced with alternative Service Provider offerings.

So here's my grass-roots poll: What Cisco certification training should come next at CBTNuggets?

I've recently been breaking out of the "certification mold" with offerings like CCNA Labs: Cisco for the Real World (http://www.cbtnuggets.com/it-training-videos/series/cisco-ccna-labs-2011). If there's an idea like this that you might have, I'm all ears!

Using Windows Server 2008 as a RADIUS Server for a Cisco ASA

The title says it all. I just forwarded this link to a guy who knew VERY little about Cisco and he was able to pull off LDAP authentication for an SSLVPN by following these well-documented steps:

Handling Visio Connectors

If you've just gotten into Viso to create network diagrams, chances are you'll be cursing Microsoft for the "connector" feature pretty quickly. Thankfully Jeremy Stretch (PacketLife) has put together a quick and simple explanation for handling this pain point:

Google+ Hangout, This Friday

UPDATE: This will be from 9:00am - 9:30am PST on Friday 2/10/12.

This should be fun - CBTNuggets is testing the new Google+ Hangout feature, which is live video/audio conferencing with a group of people. This Friday from 9:00am - 9:30am PST, I'll be doing a live Google+ Hangout session...answering questions, throwing out thoughts, and well...just hanging out. Here's the link:

https://plus.google.com/112483111186194977459/posts

Apparently, a "Hangout with Us" or something similar will appear come Friday. I think it has a 'people limit', so you may have to try a couple times to get in.

See you then!

Prolific USB to Serial on OS X Lion

Kudos to this superstar who easily got my USB-to-Serial adapter going on OS X Lion! This now makes two guys named Martijn I admire from the Netherlands...must be a trend.

I Love Tools Like This: HFS

Why do I like TFTPD32? Because it's so freakin' simple! When you're in a data center and need a quick TFTP server...there it is.

...who knew they had one for HTTP? There it is: HFS - A 600KB "insta-web server" for Windows.

http://www.rejetto.com/hfs/

Update: A few malware detection utilities flag this as malware simply because it's a .exe file named HFS. It's completely safe...I've been using it for at least 32 minutes and nothing bad has happened...

Google Proposing to make TCP Faster

Really interesting write-up, let's see if the world follows Google's advice (since that's what it will take!).
