CCIE Salaries

cash_pile.JPG

It's been about a year and a half since I posted a CCIE Salary blog post. The data is readily available with some searching, but I figured I'd post it here for reference.

Much of this data is collected based on individuals filling out questionnaires and surveys. The sample sizes aren't huge, but then again, there aren't that many CCIEs on the planet. As always, there are certainly some outlying data points that would skew this data set if included. I've heard of contractors with CCIE certifications making several hundred thousand a year. Those types of positions are few and far between, and for those of you landing gigs like that - congratulations! So without further adieu, here's the data..

First, I found this telling report on indeed that shows salary per search region. The locations are customizable, so I threw in some cities around the US to give an idea of the averages:

Also, Payscale has a great chart that shows average salaries per job role:

This data should be regarded as a small sample size of the "average" CCIE gig out there.  If anything, this provides a glimpse into how much one can earn with these specific credentials. There are always unique cases that can blow away the average.

If you have some job salary data you would like to share, please post a comment.

How much does it cost and

How much does it cost and long does it take to get the CCIE?

It really all depends on your

It really all depends on your study schedule and learning method as to how long. A good reference is around 1200 hours on CLI and 5 years of experience in the real world.

As far as cost, the sky's the limit. If you have an unlimited budget I'd say you could spend easily $30k on study material and equipment. Realistically if you only consider the cost of minimal purchases if you dont live in an area that you can drive or walk to a testing site, (plane ticket, hotel, CCIE Lab cost) the lab cost is $1500, plane average $1000, hotel average $200-300. So minimal total cost $2800.

how many % pass their first time ?

Much shorter if you forfeit your life

I'll be taking my lab January 10th. 11 months after saying "I should probably learn Cisco". I am 100% confident on config now but less than 50% confident on troubleshooting. During the past 7 months, I have taken and passed 17 Cisco exams. I expect to pass between 3 and 6 more by next Friday, possibly completing two more CCNPs.

I study an average of 6 hours a day, 7 days a week. I have seen every video from Jeremy and working as a CCSI if I'm not studying, I'm teaching all the CCNA and CCNP courses for R&S. I have access to all the Cisco course materials as a CCSI and often will read 700+ pages every night for a week or more at a time. I also watch videos from Michael Shannon (much lower success rate) as well as videos from INE.com (somewhere between Michael and Jeremy).

I have spent about $10,000 (exams included) so far and expect to spend another $5,000 over the next 3-6 months as I intend to get my CCIE R&S, CCIE Security and CCIE SP in that time.

I have 20 years of protocol development and network equipment design under my belt. So, consider where I started as a reference. It can be done quickly, but it requires an obscene amount of discipline.

That said, I taught ICND1 to my nephew during a 6 hour car drive and I expect him to be a CCENT tomorrow. Learning resources matter. I often watch entire CBT Nuggets series in a day or less so I can pay $24 for 24 hours. I sleep before hand and buy a lot of Red Bull and cigarettes and stay wired the whole time.

Good luck if you try!
