The Kindle

I've been thinking about picking up a Kindle lately. Everyone I've talked to that has one says they're awesome for reading.

The plane old Kindle seems to be the way to go since all I really want it for is reading, but the gadget geek in me wants to try out the Kindle Fire to play with the extra features. Anyone have one of these that can share there experience in the comments? I'd appreciate it a lot and I'm sure others would too.

I've just fetched the "old"

I've just fetched the "old" black-white modell and I'm quite happy. Very light, good readable, bit outed usage of keys and menus, but as you wrote - one could easily read books and pdfs. Exactly why one would be a Kindle.

So my +1 for the old modell.

Nook 1st Edition

I've got a Nook (1st Edition as it is called now). had it for over a year. I love it. Can read on it for HOURS with no eye strain. I am sure the eInk Kindle is just as great. I went with the Nook since 1. All I wanted it for was reading and I would think that the back lit units would kill my eyes, and 2. it does ePUBS. I don't believe the Kindle does those. Also, I was hoping to do PDF reading on it, but as I found out it will read them, just the formatting is off a lot of the time. Also I can't bookmark them. I am thinking of another tablet for that as I have an iPAD but I just don't like to read on it. For Magazines it is ok... but other things, not so great.

If you need to read and

If you need to read and anotate PDFs (ex: cisco docs) it sucks!

The older model has much

The older model has much better battery life, and a free 3G option for downloading books if you get that model. So unless you want a full blown tablet device, the old model is the way to go.

kindle 3

I have the Kindle 3 (now called the Kindle Keyboard) and i love it for reading cert books (in kindle editions because pdf is rendered terribly). I haven't seen a need to upgrade until today when I discovered the Fire now supports ARALOC and my TKL account has recently moved to using ARALOC instead of LocLizard for DRM. Needless to say i will be retiring my Kindle 3 for a Fire very soon.

digital INK is best for reading

go for the old plain kindle for reading, and i know the geek in you is telling you to get kindle fire, and especially when you can reimage it with android, and run full android tablet os...but you know what happens, when you only want to read and you have so many distractions...

I just bought Fire

Perfect piece for a great learner on the move.
the only thing which i dont like about fire is the on/off button position at bottom.
If you try to put it straight on the plane surface, it will automatically goes in sleep mode.

kindle

The biggest issue I have seen is reading pdfs (i.e. Cisco books) thats why I have not bought one yet.

HI

Kindle dx graphite one is way to go!! I have used both 6 inch keyboard kindle and 9 inch kindle dx, I can assure kindle dx is worth to it's price. Especially when you are looking for an t cisco docs, the big screen of kindle dx will show its value. You will see what I mean when you read through a tiny little text on a 6 inch screen kindle for few hours straight.

For kindle fire, even though I have not used it yet, I can say lcd screen is not for reading and the few more extra features will just distract you from the purpose of the e-reader.

Nowadays kindle dx 2nd generation is only 200 buck on ebay. it used to be over 400 bucks a year ago. So go for the kindle dx!
